✨ Getting Ready to Write a New Chapter in Deadhead Salts (or Anything Really):
My Quick + Quirky Method
Hey creatives, magical makers, and story shapers!
You know that moment—the blank page stares at you like it’s daring you to try. You want to write, but your brain is still tangled in work, kids, cats, dogs, dishes, deadlines, or that one awkward text from last week. Spinning and spinning. So what do you do?
You trick yourself into writing. Gently. Kindly. With snacks and coffee.
Here’s my go-to ritual when I need to jump back into my middle grade novel Deadhead Salts (or honestly, any creative project) fast—and still feel good doing it.
🌿 Step 1: Reread the Last Paragraph
Like eavesdropping on yourself from yesterday. One quick peek reminds me what emotional tone I left off on—was Hazel panicking? Plotting? Petting a deadhead? I pick up the thread and weave.
✏️ Step 2: Glance at My Character Sketches
Just the key players for this chapter. Who’s showing up? What energy are they bringing? I might scribble a little note like “Rowan is feeling spicy today” or “Hazel wants answers but also snacks.” It keeps me grounded in their voices.
No pressure outlines here-- just a quick, easy list:
Something spooky happens
Hazel lies (badly)
Benny gives heart eyes
And then... oops, someone falls through a floorboard.
This loose roadmap helps me keep the chapter moving.
🎯 Step 4: Set a Tiny Writing Goal
I ask, “What would feel like a win today?”
100 words? A paragraph? That one tricky scene with the ghost? I choose one thing and call it enough. I also set an alarm to ding, selecting a beautiful sound to chime every hour. This alerts me that it's time for a break. I listen. It keeps me happy and healthy.
🍵 Step 5: Set the Vibe
I light a candle, make a weird little tea (rose + ginger today), add a droplet of essential oils, and put on forest sounds or feminine vibes. My space isn’t always clean, but my energy is. That’s what matters.
💬 Final Thoughts
Writing a chapter doesn’t have to feel like a chore. These tiny rituals help me slip into the story with curiosity and joy. They make rewriting fun!
Try it, tweak it, toss what doesn’t work.
Write weird. Write wild. Write you.
Write~on,
Angie 💙
